Dr. Death- Euthanizing Animals

I watched this last night and bawled my eyes out. It’s not for the faint of heart. It is for idiots who buy or breed dogs.

THIS IS WHY I’M A CRAZY ANIMAL PERSON. Because for all the idiots out there actively contributing to the problem day in and day out, there need to be some people who at least try to do something about it. Granted all I can do is try, and any of my efforts can only really address the symptoms rather than the causes, and it’s more often than not in vain since I can’t change the laws, but a life saved is still a life saved. Which is always worth it.

Spay. Neuter. Foster. Adopt. Donate.

This is Ava, a pit bull used as bait to train fighting dogs. She was recently picked up as a stray by animal services who would have had no choice but to put her down had Noah’s Ark Rescue not stepped up to care for her despite being at capacity. Noah’s Ark is an amazing rescue dedicated to helping extreme cases like this (follow this link to their abused animals page), and they are accepting donations to help with her care. Click the photo to go to her donation page.
I know that some people believe that the most humane thing people can do for dogs who have already been through so much is to euthanize them, and I do understand that sentiment. But I personally believe dogs that have been through hell at the hands of humans are owed a second chance so that they can experience the love and happiness that they so badly deserve. I base my belief on the fact that there are countless examples of severely abused dogs—like Oogy and Patrick—who are now thriving because people cared enough to give them their second chance.
*I do apologize for the graphic photo, which immediately brought tears to my eyes, but people should see the effects of abuse as many states still have very lax penalties for animal abuse offenses.

On Animal Rescue

After posting yesterday afternoon about the pit bull mom and her 8 pups at Orange County Animal Services, I had NO idea it would garner 3,000+ notes (and counting). On the one hand, I’m thrilled because all that networking lead to a foster home for them, which means they won’t be euthanized. But reading all of the comments on reblogs was a little disheartening because a lot of people seem to miss the point somewhat. Two of the most common themes for the comments and my responses to them:

I would soooo help out, but I’m nowhere near Florida!

Response: I GUARANTEE that if you go to your local kill shelter, you can find all manner of amazing dogs (and cats) who are going to be put to sleep if they don’t find a foster or permenanent home. This particular girl is taken care of now, so use her as the posterchild for your own personal motivation to become a foster or to adopt. There are hundreds of thousands of innocent pets euthanized every day and they deserve a chance, too.

This is so cruel! I can’t believe they would euthanize a mother and her babies!

Response: It seems cruel, but the kill shelter is just the end of the line for a far larger problem that they didn’t create. Far crueller are the people who don’t spay and neuter their animals, people who irresponsibly breed, people who support pet stores or puppy stores that perpetuate a cycle of overbreeding, and people who don’t take their responsibilities as a pet owner seriously. Shelters can’t create homes when there are none and they can’t create room and resources at a shelter where there are none. You won’t fix the problem by scapegoating and demonizing the shelter, you fix it by ensuring that dogs never end up in the shelter to begin with.
